Math Games

Why Games?

Imagine you are a police officer getting a call that a bank robbery is happening. You report to the scene with the only knowledge that there are 10 people involved in this robbery and the leader of the operation is the tallest of them all. They are running out of the bank one at a time and you only have time to catch one person, but if you catch the leader then the others will stop their escape. How do you approach this?

This scenario is deeply stupid and impractical, but it is still fun to pose the question to yourself. In this little game of thinking if you dive deep enough you will come up on a mathematical truth of Optimal Stopping Theory. Now I am not here to engage with that theory indepth here but only to use that as a springboard to say that behind all great games lies some mathematical truth. Math is already abstract as it is, so if we just gamify it with made up things it isn't a huge leap in thinking, just makes it a little bit more fun.
